Healing Trauma with Imagery - Intensive

Sat 10th, Sun 11th April & Sat 15th May 21, 10 am - 4.30pm (UK GMT)

Learn effective imagery skills and exercises for personal growth and professional purposes.

Who is it for?

The training is intended for experienced therapists, coaches or other professionals working with trauma.

This includes psychotherapists, counsellors, psychologists, psychiatrists, psychosynthesis guides/coaches, social workers and therapists.

Why participate?

Words only partially express a person’s inner experience. Imagery offers a more comprehensive representation of the human mind and a way to deal with important psychological matters.

Imagery is a particularly useful method in the treatment of trauma because disturbing spontaneous images related to a traumatic psychological wound generally occupy a central position in the perception and behaviour of a person, affecting all aspects of their life.

This course will teach participants how to help their clients express and address distressing and frightening situations in a metaphorical and symbolic form, without having to reveal all the details, and find a path to healing.

Our approach

Transpersonal psychology offers healing possibilities that are usually unknown to the traumatised person.

Psychosynthesis applied to psychotherapy is a unique approach that combines both psychology and spirituality. It is a transpersonal and holistic process that helps the individual deal with patterns of behaviours which inhibit or prevent living life in meaningful and fulfilling ways. The psychosynthesis understanding is that human beings have the internal tools to overcome most situations (intellectual, emotional, spiritual and physical), and that vital and healing sources exist in every human being.

Imagery applied to trauma offers new perspectives, hope, and a way to reveal people’s inner healing force.

Learning outcomes

- Increased knowledge and confidence on how to support traumatised clients: after the training, participant will be able to efficiently apply this step-by-step approach in their field of work.

- Participants will also be more confident in their personal life as imagery contributes to self-development and provides tools to achieve personal goals.

What to expect?

Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th April:

• Presentation of case studies and theoretical background, to illustrate the a simple and dynamic model that Jan Taal has developed working alongside trauma over decades.

• Introduction of a model, which incorporates a step-by-step approach used to heal trauma. Live demonstrations bring the healing ability of this model to life.

• Practice & experiential exercises in small breakout rooms (for each step).

• Developing techniques and understanding of Imagery in different ways: drawing, roleplay, symbols and other techniques will be practiced.

• Plenary sharing, feedback, group reflection and discussions to develop the depth of work.

After the first part of the training (weekend), participants will be invited to practice what they have learned with clients and/or voluntary subjects. A short reflective paper will be required from participants, which will be discussed on Saturday 15th May.

Saturday 15th May

• Discussion and reporting on participants’ reflections and assignments, to further embed and develop practice.

• An opportunity to ground and further develop skills through supervised practicums.

Before attending the workshop, participants are required to read two articles either before the training or before the 3rd day:

- Imagery in the treatment of trauma (J. Taal& J. Krop, 2003)

- The Three Stages of Imagery (Jan Taal, 2019)

Trainer

In 1978 Jan Taal discovered imagery as a major tool for development and transformation during his Psychosynthesis training.

Ever since imagery in its many forms has been a tremendously interesting and thrilling adventure both for himself as well for many clients.

Jan writes: ‘In each of us there is a continuous stream of vital energy coming from the depth of our soul. With imagery, genuine contact can be made and obstacles of any kind may be cleared away or transformed’.

Jan studied Clinical Psychology and Psychosynthesis in the Netherlands and Italy (1973- 1982). Prior to psychology Jan studied Cultural Anthropology and wandered in Afghanistan, the mountains of North-West Pakistan, India and Nepal (1969-1973). He studied Eastern and Western Spiritual Traditions, Sufism, Jungian and Transpersonal Psychology and Traditional Medicine and rituals, last decade also with Indigenous healers in the Amazon region of Peru. Jan introduced imagery and art therapy in the care of cancer patients by coordinating large, ground breaking events in collaboration with the Dutch Cancer Society, and by developing the Imagery Toolbox. Jan works as licensed health care psychologist and trainer and is director of the Amsterdam School for Imagery. He is a qualified expert for the Dutch Psycho-Oncology Society (NVPO).
