Health Anchors Learning Network Launch Event
Event Information
About this Event
Join Dr Bola Owolabi, Director – Health Inequalities at NHS England and NHS Improvement and Dr Jennifer Dixon, Chief Executive of the Health Foundation, to discuss how the NHS can work in partnership and utilise its role as an anchor institution to influence the social determinants of health, improve health outcomes and reduce health inequalities.
Bola and Jennifer will set out the crucial role the NHS can play as an anchor institution in improving the health and wellbeing of communities and how developing the anchor role aligns with the strategic priorities of the NHS.
We will share information on the new UK-wide Health Anchors Learning Network (HALN) and how it will support the development of anchors. We will also share how you can get involved and connect with others who are interested in anchors and partnership working.
Who is this for?
This event is for everyone interested in, or responsible for, anchor approaches within their local contexts. Colleagues from health organisations, like trusts, hospitals and CCGs; integrated care systems; primary care networks, regional bodies; and partners, like local authorities or other public agencies, voluntary and community and social enterprise (VCSE) sector or educational or housing organisations are welcome to join.
What are anchor institutions?
Anchor institutions are large public sector organisations which are rooted in place and connected to their communities, such as universities, local authorities, and hospitals. Anchors have significant assets and spending power and can consciously use these resources to benefit communities.
As well as providing health services, the NHS can use its resources and influence to maximise its social, economic and environmental impacts (social value) to improve the social determinants of health, health outcomes and reduce health inequalities. Working in partnership with communities, other anchors and organisations at a local, system and regional level is essential to achieving these ambitions.
