Dr Iain McKinnon is a psychiatrist and researcher specialising in the overlap between forensic mental health, vulnerable populations, and the criminal justice system. He has developed innovative screening and intervention approaches in police custody, and currently leads the NIHR-funded PIONEER-MH study on crisis response pathways. Based at Newcastle University, he co-leads the Mental Health, Dementia and Neurodegeneration Theme and has secured over £3m in research funding. Alongside his clinical role in secure services, he mentors clinicians and contributes to national and international initiatives in forensic psychiatry.
