About this event

Please join us for this inaugural event of the BATH-WESTERN partnership, hosted by Centre for Analysis of Social Policy at the University of Bath and Western University, Canada. In collaboration with the MENASP network.

Academics from around the globe will talk for 5 minutes each about the major health equity issues affecting their respective countries. Raconteur [Prof Mark Hammond] will sum up and we will finish by suggesting common research topics for the future.

Speaker Biographies

Dr Jacob Shelley

Dr Jacob Shelley is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Law and School of Health Studies and adjunct faculty in the Rotman Institute of Philosophy at Western University. He is also the Director of the Health Ethics, Law & Policy (HELP) Lab. Dr. Shelley has a Doctorate of Juridical Science from the University of Toronto, where he studied the use of product liability law to address the dangers in food. His work is primarily at the intersection of law, ethics, health and science.

Dr Itab Shuayb

Dr. Itab Shuayb is a researcher and academic in the field of Architecture, human-centered approach, inclusive design accessibility, and disability studies. She is currently leading the Disability Hub- Centre for Lebanese Studies at the Lebanese American University . At the Disability Hub, she conducts research and studies about disability in Lebanon and the Region to learn more about the Disability rights movement, the barriers, and gaps that limit the full inclusion of people with disabilities. She produces short videos and campaigns that raise awarness of the needs of a diverse range users.

Prof Ndangwa Noyoo

Ndangwa Noyoo is a Professor at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the Director of the Zola Skweyiya African Social Policy Innovation (ZSASPI) at UCT. He previously was employed by the South African Government in the Department of Social Development as a Chief Director/Social Policy Specialist, He has published widely in the areas of social policy, social development, social work, human rights, corporate social responsibility and indigenous knowledge systems.

Thilani Kaushalya

Thilani has a Master’s in Agricultural and Applied Economics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), USA. She has over eight years of work experience in conducting applied economic research in academia and think tanks. During this period, she has worked in occupation safety, food and health, education, and poverty and wellbeing. At CEPA, Thilani works for the Basic Services and Social Protection thematic area.

Dr Ricardo Velazquez Leyer

Dr Ricardo Velazquez Leyer is Full-time Professor in Universidad Iberoamericana Ciudad de México, Mexico City. He has a PhD in Social Policy from the University Bath and MSc in Management and Public Policy from the University of Manchester. His areas of research are social policy, poverty and inequality, welfare regimes, tax and benefit systems and historical-institutional analysis of welfare policies in Mexico and Latin America. He has been a Lecturer at the Meritorious Autonomous University of Puebla (BUAP) and the University of Bath, in turn, and has been visiting professor at the Free University of Berlin at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Dr Amilcar Manuel Reis Moreira

Amilcar Moreira was awarded a PhD in Social and Policy Sciences by the University of Bath (UK). Since 2011, he is a researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon (Portugal). Since 2018, he is also an Invited Assistant Professor at the Lisbon School of Economics and Management. His research revolves around the impact of demographic ageing on the welfare states of advanced economies. Amílcar Moreira is the Principal Researcher of DYNAPOR, a dynamic microsimulation tool for the study of the redistributive effects of the Portuguese Pension System. As the lead researcher for DYNAPOR, he has been invited by the European Commission (TAIEX) to provide technical advice to the Croatian Government on the development of this type of tools, and to contribute to the up-coming (2021) 'Pension Adequacy Report'.

Mark Hammond

Mark Hammond is currently a Visiting Fellow for CASP at the University of Bath. He has a plethora of experience related to reducing health inequality having working as part of bodies including the Sussex Clinical Commissioning Group(NHS) and the Equality and Human Rights Commission. Mark is also a visiting Professor in Public Policy at Canterbury Christchurch University where he's worked on a document called Kent and Medway: Health And Social Care: A Brexit Impact Assessment.
