In this informal and dynamic online event, leading scholar Professor James Nazroo (University of Manchester) will explore the topic of health outcomes of older people from racially minoritised groups with esteemed campaigner and researcher Dr Halima Begun (Runnymede Trust), and with Sam Toolan (CABS) acting as a host and facilitator.

The event will offer audiences a critical lens on key concepts shaping our understanding of health outcomes as they pertain to racially minoritised older people. In their discussion, panellists will delve into some of the prominent discussions and discourses that underpin these concepts and will seek to expose future knowledge pathways to guide researchers, policymakers and lay audiences alike. There will be opportunities to feed in questions from the audience to the discussion.

Panel Members:

Dr Halima Begum. Halima is an accomplished leader and researcher. Her experience spans education, equality, human rights, public health, the environment and post-conflict reconstruction. She is currently Chief Executive of the Runnymede Trust, The UK's leading independent race equality think tank, and has held senior leadership positions with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the British Council and LEGO Foundation, among others. Dr Begum completed her PhD at Queen Mary University of London, submitting a thesis entitled Commodifying multicultures: urban regeneration and the politics of space in Spitalfields. She has since published on geographies of inclusion/exclusion concerning British Muslim women in the East End of London.

Professor James Nazroo. James is an academic leader and internationally acclaimed scholar of health and social inequalities.He is the founding and Deputy Director of the ESRC Centre of Dynamics of Ethnicity (CoDE), co-Principal Investigator (PI) of the Synergi Collaborative Centre, which is investigating ethnic inequalities in severe mental illness, and founding and co-Director of the Manchester Institute for Collaborative Research on Ageing (MICRA). He was Principal Investigator of the fRaill programme, an interdisciplinary study of inequalities in later life, and is co-PI of the English Longitudinal Study of Aging. Issues of inequality, social justice and underlying processes of stratification have been the primary focus of Professor Nazroo’s research activities, centring on ethnicity/race, ageing, gender, and the interrelationships between these. His research on ageing has focused on understanding the patterns and determinants of social and health inequalities in ageing populations. He has conducted studies on quality of life for older people among different ethnic groups in the UK, on inequalities in health at older ages, and on routes into retirement and the impact of retirement on health and well-being.

Sam Toolan. Sam Toolan is a part-time PhD student registered at The Open University. His research explores relationships between migration, settlement and mental health concerning racially minoritised older women in the UK. Sam’s research adopts a constructivist stance and a lifecourse perspective and incorporates a Grounded Theory methodology. In addition to being a PhD student, Sam works in Higher Education on external engagement and institutional partnership development.

The Early Researchers in Ageing group of The British Society of Gerontology warmly invites you to join a Gerontology & Tonic online event after this discussion. The G&Ts are a format where you can meet up informally with other BSG ERA members. We usually support each other with short and casual presentations on gerontological theory for “accidental gerontologists,” followed by a virtual drink together and an informal hang-out. At this G&T we will follow up on the Health Outcomes disussion and have an open space to chat, discuss, ask questions, and connect without pressure.
