Description

What is MECC (Making Every Contact Count)?

Receiving prompts from people that they respect and trust encourages individuals to change their behaviour to improve their health. In your everyday role you talk to many patients who could take simple steps to improve their health by changing their behaviour. Making Every Contact Count (MECC) uses a brief advice approach which usually takes just a few minutes. It involves raising a lifestyle issue with an individual (where appropriate) and signposting for further information and support from the Healthy Lifestyles Team and other local options.

What is Active Signposting?

Active Signposting enables patients to access the most appropriate source of help without first having to see their GP. Reception staff are able to direct patients using a list of local services.

For a quick overview of Active Signposting here’s a short video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTKAzctg-m4

Each GP Practice (or group of practices) in Telford and Wrekin will be managing the implementation of Active Signposting in their own practice to their own timescale. In many local practices staff already signpost patients to alternative services such as PEARs and pharmacy without the need for a GP appointment and Active Signposting builds on this approach.

The requirement;

NHS England (Robert Varnam) identifies the following criteria for the implementation of Active Signposting;

1. Inclusion of focus on recognising red flag symptoms which require urgent medical attention

2. Skills development to ensure staff are confident in communicating available options

3. Opportunities to hear from receptionists already using active signposting

4. Support for practice to develop its own directory of services, including the opportunity to learn from other practices

Points 1 and 4 will need to be considered by GP practices so that staff are aware of the implementation plan in their practice before they attend the training.

MECC and Active Signposting training

Telford and Wrekin CCG and Public Health are putting on training sessions for all GP reception staff to give you the skills and confidence to have these conversations with patients. The training will be delivered by local provider Lifestyle Connect, it will involve some pre reading/preparation followed by a two hour face to face session focussing on the skills required to ‘have the conversation’ for Health and Wellbeing MECC and leading onto Active Signposting .

The training content will be guided by NHS Health Education England resources;

• Implementation of Making Every Contact Count (http://www.makingeverycontactcount.co.uk/national-resources/)

• Care Navigation: A Competency Framework (https://www.hee.nhs.uk/hee-your-area/north-central-east-london/our-work/attracting-developing-our-workforce/multi-professional-workforce/care-navigation-competency-framework)
