Healthier with Nature: Nordic Walking
Date and time
An intro to Nordic Walking: the basic technique, applying it to your health needs, further info. Includes rest breaks and a beautiful walk.
About this event
Nordic walking is a very simple fitness activity which comes from cross-country skiing. It is a natural action based entirely on your regular walking and adds two poles and a specific technique to turn your walk into a whole-body exercise.
For an inactive person or someone who doesn't enjoy exercising, Nordic walking is like a supportive walk which uses all your main muscle groups, works your heart and lungs, and improves your posture all in one activity. It’s easy to learn, very effective, safe and fun.
This two hour introduction to Nordic Walking is run by Vicky Welsh. Vicky has 12 years expereince creating and delivering Nordic walking classes and up until 2020 ran the award winning business Bristol Nordic Walking. She is now involved with promoting Nordic walking more widely and establishing community Nordic walking programmes.
During the two hour workshop you will learn the basic Nordic walking technique and how to apply it to your own health and wellbeing needs. We will have plenty of rest breaks and go for a lovely walk in Blaise Castle Estate so you can practice your new skills and connect with nature. Vicky will also provide information on what further training is needed to set up your own Nordic walking group or to become a qualified Nordic walking instructor.
What to wear and bring:
This is an outdoor event so please come appropriately dressed for the weather:
- Ideally layered clothing (you may get hot).
- A waterproof if it looks like rain.
- A cap and sunscreen if the weather is hot.
- A back pack or bum bag (no handbags or cross-body bags as it will affect your ability to swing your arms).
- Walking shoes are ideal.
- Walking boots are okay too so long as the sole of your boot isn't too rigid.
- Trainers are also good provided it hasn't been raining as you will get wet feet walking on the grass (waterproof socks are a good option).
- Water, snacks, and a sit-mat - we will be stopping for breaks.
- Nordic walking poles will be provided.
This is both a fun event and an opportunity to learn a new skill. If you've any further questions please email vicky@letswalkbristol.org
