Event description

Description

This symposium aims to clarify the current issues facing evidence-based healthcare in the field of implants and medical devices and to identify areas where organisations (including HealthWatch) might most productively concentrate their efforts.

A briefing paper for the symposium is in preparation and will be circulated.

Initial presentations:

  • Prof Carl Heneghan, Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine, Oxford (Lessons from surgical mesh)
  • Deborah Cohen, British Medical Journal and BBC, London (Current regulations fail to protect)
  • Prof Peter McCulloch,The IDEAL Collaboration, Oxford (The IDEAL Collaboration and necessary evidence)

...followed by breakout workshop discussion groups with a plenary report back and synthesis of collective opinion.

By the end of the symposium, participants will have a clearer picture of the rules and regulations relating to medical devices, be able to identify areas where evidence is required and have developed a priority list of potential actions and activities.
