Event description
Time to place healthy housing at the heart of Government

About this Event

Given most of us spend over 90% of our time indoors, and now considerably more due to the Covid-19 pandemic, our homes need to positively contribute to our physical and mental health and wellbeing and not diminish it. There are a spectrum of health risks suffered by the population living and working in poor accommodation. Successive governments have failed to make the connection between the nation’s health and wellbeing and housing and place healthy homes at the heart of Government. We know that unhealthy housing impacts on economic growth, business performance, educational attainment, life chances and the nation’s health and wellbeing therefore it makes sense for Government to join-up policy thinking and ensure new and existing homes do not cause or exacerbate poor health and wellbeing.

As an essential step, our White Paper calls for greater Governance around healthy homes and buildings and states that “Government need to establish a cross departmental committee for health and buildings to champion change; recognising the interaction between homes, buildings, health, education and the economy”. There is clear consensus from across the sector that greater governance is needed to ensure that health and wellbeing is considered in all Government policy across all departments.

This Healthy Homes and Building Good Governance Summit, with Rt Hon Chris Pincher MP, Minister for Housing, will bring together government departments and agencies to join-up policy thinking on healthy homes and buildings and focus on how we can champion change and improve the nation’s health and wellbeing at this critical time.
