Hear Say – the annual networking conference on community, food and health organised by Community Food and Health (Scotland) part of NHS Health Scotland

24 October at the Carnegie Conference Centre, Dunfermline.

You can look forward to hearing what community organisations, researchers and policy makers have to say about evidence and their experience at our popular annual networking event for volunteers, practitioners, planners and academics addressing issues around food, health and inequalities with Scotland’s communities.

With an interesting mix of workshops (You will be asked to make your choices when registering - please see below for information about each workshop), a panel of three experienced speakers, you will also have opportunities for networking, discussion and sharing your experiences with others.

Workshop information

Workshop session 1 (Morning) - you will be asked to choose one of the following options

1. Community empowerment and community food initiatives
The Community Health Exchange (CHEX) will lead a discussion around the Community Empowerment Act and how community food initiatives can benefit from this.

2. Sustainable food cities and low-income communities
Edinburgh Community Food will kick off a discussion around sustainable food cities.

3. Community initiatives and Type 2 Diabetes?
Lanarkshire Community Food and Health Partnership will use their recent experience to kick off a discussion about addressing diabetes.

4. Food security and the ‘dignity in practice’ programme
Nourish will kick off a discussion around their experience of delivering their ‘Dignity in Practice’ programme.

5. Making a difference with cooking skills courses
NHS Grampian’s Confidence to Cook programme will kick off a discussion on how reflection and simple evaluation ideas can help improve your cooking skills courses.

6. An open discussion on the future of community food activity in Scotland (part one) (you do not need to attend both parts of these open discussions)
How could the evidence you gather and the evaluation you undertake better influence the design and delivery of national and local priorities around food and health in the years to come?

Workshop session 2 (Afternoon) - you will be asked to choose one of the following options

1. Tips and ideas for successful community-led research
Central and West Integration Network will lead a discussion on how they have supported volunteers to lead and carry out research on food security/ diet and obesity/ within a range of minority ethnic groups.

2. Making a difference for trainees with learning disabilities in a community café
Windmills café will kick off a discussion on how focusing on outcomes and evaluation has helped improve outcomes for the young people with learning disabilities who run the café.

3. Using a community development approach to running community cooking skills courses
Community Health Team Dundee/ Dundee City Council Adult Learning Team will lead a discussion on how using a community development approach can help you reach people and improve your cooking skills courses

4. Older people and malnutrition – where next?
The Food Train will kick off a discussion around malnutrition and older people living at home.

5. Edible and Tasty Spaces- growing fruit and veg in public spaces
Eats Rosyth (Edible and Tasty Spaces) will kick off a discussion on what they have learned about setting up, maintaining and encouraging local people to make the most of Edible and Tasty Spaces.

6. An open discussion on the future of community food activity in Scotland (part two) (you do not need to attend both parts of these open discussions)
What would allow the scope and scale of your initiative to better influence the design and delivery of national and local priorities around food and health in the years to come?
