Event description
3 day online course (free to those working with people with experience of offending or detention only)

About this event

Zoom training:

Friday 23rd, Monday 26th & Tuesday 27th July 2021

10.00am - 4.30pm

Timings include an hours break for lunch and two other 15-minute breaks. Registration entails a commitment to attend all three sessions.

This online training course, split across 3 days, is open to people across the country who would like to develop or sustain a Hearing Voices Group in a prison; Immigration Removal Centres; medium / high secure forensic units; or community projects working with groups of people once detained in such settings. Training also covers facilitation of Unusual Belief / Alternate Realities Groups.

According to the MoJ (2013), 25% of women and 15% of men in prison report symptoms indicative of 'psychosis' (including distress around hearing voices, seeing things or beliefs). In forensic services, this percentage is likely to be much higher. In light of this, since 2010, we have been working to set up Hearing Voices Groups in prisons, forensic secure units and Immigration Removal Centres. This network in secure settings is the first of its kind, we now have more than 20 groups across Greater London, the North and the Midlands.

Peer support groups are an established and valuable resource for people who experience voices, visions and other unusual sensory perceptions or alternative realities. Groups provide a safe space to share individual viewpoints, support each other, and find ways of making sense of experiences.

ABOUT THE COURSE

We shall cover the following:

  • Diverse experiences and understandings of voices, visions, beliefs/alternate realities and 'psychosis' in secure forensic settings
  • Coping strategies and pathways to recovery
  • Power and empowerment within secure settings
  • Practical facilitation skills, including dealing with difficult situations/problem solving
  • Planning, launching and sustaining Hearing voices groups
  • Training includes consideration of online groups

Grounded in lived experience, and our work supporting people in different secure settings, we use powerpoint slides, practical activity and discussion to cater to a variety of learning styles.

‘Having attended many courses in my work since qualifying in 2002 I would like to say it was one of the best courses I have attended and a great opportunity for exploration and learning.’ - Trainee from 3-day facilitation training

ELIGIBILITY

The course is FREE but open only to those committed to facilitating a Hearing Voices Group within a prison, IRC, medium/high secure forensic unit or community setting with ex-detainees.

Places on this course fill up fast, please register quickly to avoid disappointment. Please note we are only able to take up to 3 people from each institution and take this into consideration when allocating places.
