Event description
A whistle stop tour of Heat Pumps in the context of Housing Retrofit

About this event

Are you a householder actively considering an air source heat pump? Want to get rid of your current boiler but unsure what a heat pump entails? Or, have you already installed a heat pump but remain confused by it and how it works.

This short course is designed for non-technical householders and will take you through everything you need to know about air-source heat pumps, from designing systems, to procurement of contractors, to understanding the installation process.

The course provides an overview of Air Source Heat Pump operation, and examines Heat Pumps in the context of home energy efficiency and retrofit, taking into account demand reduction and air-tightness issues.

Self-taught heat-pump wizard Andy Hamilton, mechanical services engineer Florence Collier of Humblebee Eco and Trystan Lea of Open Energy Monitor will be providing in-depth case studies, hints and tips for choosing the appropriate system, and finding the right installer.

Marianne Heaslip, retrofit architect from URBED, and Liam Schofield, People Powered Retrofit Manager, will be providing insights into how to appropriately place Air Source Heat Pump systems within a housing retrofit context.

The course will culminate with an opportunity for participants to share their individual plans as part of an ongoing peer-learning project, aiming to support the development of community-led expertise in this specialist area.

Course Outline:

SESSION 1: Heat Pumps Basics

Content: Florence and Andy take you through the procurement process, step by step from design and sizing to choosing the best installer.

SESSION 4: Retrofit and Heat Pumps

Presenters: Liam Schofield, Jonathan Atkinson and Marianne Heaslip

Content: Emphasising the need to reduce energy demand before sizing, specing and installing the heat pump and to cover some of the basic and more advanced measures. We'll also run through the People Powered Retrofit service as there will be some crossover with this group of people who are involved with the service and in the process of designing or procuring heat pumps.

SESSION 5: The Physics of Heat Pumps & Participant case studies

Presenters: Andy Hamilton and Florence Collier

Content: Viability, Local Installers, Types of installation, Monitoring, and Watch-its.

Development of System Plans put forward by those already planning installations.
