Event description
Explore the process of heat transfer printing onto textiles on this one day experimental workshop.

About this Event

Learn how to use disperse dyes and transfer papers to create interesting pattern and colour onto cloth.

Disperse dyes and heat transfer papers can be applied to fabric using a heat press. You will use different methods to create surface pattern imagery and develop a range of patterned textile samples. You will explore the use of different techniques to create imagery using hand cut stencils and hand painted imagery.

What experience do I need?

This workshop is aimed at complete beginners, although those with a prior understanding of the techniques may use the workshop to develop their skills and gain tutor advice and guidance in a friendly studio environment.

What will I make?

You will make a range of surface pattern textile samples using heat transfer techniques which can be used at home for sewing projects or be framed as textile art pieces.

Who is my tutor?

Kirstie Williams is a founding member of Leeds Print Workshop. She is a practising designer and printmaker creating both textile and paper based work. She studied MA Textile Design at Chelsea College of Art in 2010 and completed a PGCE teaching qualification at the University of Huddersfield in 2014. Kirstie previously worked as an Associate Lecturer for Short Courses at Leeds College of Art, primarily teaching in adult education. She is passionate about bringing together a new creative community in Leeds through the running and development of Leeds Print Workshop.

Do I need to bring anything?

Basic materials needed for the day will be provided, including disperse inks, transfer papers, newsprint paper, brushes, sponges etc. You are advised to bring along some plain fabrics. Synthetic materials such as polyester work best but you can also get some lighter, more subtle results onto cotton . Small fabric samples will be provided but if you wish to make larger pieces you’ll need to bring your own fabrics along.

You may also benefit from bringing along thin objects such as paper doilies, lace material, dried leaves, threads etc as these will all make great patterns.

Covid Safety

Our workshops and courses look a little bit different as we ensure safe procedures are in place in light of Coronavirus. The changes we have made include;

  • Fewer participants to allow for social distancing
  • Requesting that students attend the workshop with a mask or face covering
  • Hand sanitiser provided on entry
  • Shared aprons will not be provided so please bring your own apron or wear old clothes to the workshop

Full guidance on our Covid-19 policies can be found on our website here.

If I can't attend can I get a refund?

We will refund you if you cancel no less than 14 days before the start of the first session of the course, after this time no refunds will be issued. Please note Eventbrite’s booking fee is non refundable. By making a booking you are agreeing to our full course terms and conditions which can be found on our website here.

What if the course is cancelled?

We reserve the right to cancel the course for any reason (for example, insufficient bookings). We will endeavour to give at least 7 days notice if the course is cancelled and in the event of cancellation we will, of course, issue you a full refund.

Accessibility

Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible. By their nature, some printmaking processes involve an amount of physical effort. Leeds Print Workshop is based in a basement studio at Patrick Studios, a bespoke venue for artists operated by East Street Arts. It is fully wheelchair accessible, with a lift, larger than standard doors and disabled toilet facilities. We recognise that everybody’s accessibility needs may differ, therefore please email us at hello@leedsprintworkshop.org to discuss any concerns you may have before booking. There is one dedicated disabled car parking space to the side of the building on Rider Street.

Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
