Join us for an enchanting hike through the gorgeous heathland landscapes of the Devil's Punch Bowl. This adventure showcases the best of the Surrey Heathlands, as we enjoy panoramic views, traverse lush woods and explore legendary sites.
We’ll be treated to sweeping views across undulating hills and vibrant heathland. The area is known for its unusual sand-based terrain, creating a striking contrast of textures as we hike through open heath and ancient woodlands.
The route takes us through the iconic Devil's Punch Bowl, a large hollow of dry sandy heath steeped in folklore. Along the way, we’ll uncover the tales of highwaymen at Gibbet Hill and the tragic murder at the Sailor’s Stone, as well as marvel at the striking views from some of Surrey’s highest points. We’ll walk in the footsteps of writers like Charles Dickens and Bram Stoker and traverse tranquil woodland and heathland paths.

HIKE DESCRIPTION
Our hike begins in Haslemere, a town known for its medieval market heritage and vibrant arts scene. We set off on the Greensand Way, traversing enchanting woodlands and open heathlands toward the Devil’s Punch Bowl. This iconic landmark, with its steep slopes and sweeping vistas, brims with mythology and history. Here, we’ll delve into the legend of the Devil’s quarrel with Thor, believed to have led to the creation of the stunning amphitheatre we see today.
From the Punch Bowl, we ascend to Gibbet Hill, the second-highest point in Surrey, where criminals were once displayed as a grim warning to others. On clear days, the views from this spot stretch as far as London. Along the way, we’ll uncover the chilling story of the 18th-century murder that inspired the Sailor’s Stone memorial, pause at the Celtic Cross, erected to dispel lingering superstitions, and admire Xylem, an evocative art installation celebrating nature’s interconnections.
Finally, we return to Haslemere, completing our circular journey. With its historic charm and ties to literary giants like Alfred Lord Tennyson and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the town offers the perfect end to a hike that seamlessly weaves natural beauty, history, and folklore.
MEETING POINT
Waterloo station, 8:55am, leave at 9:15am for the 9:31am train. Meet under the main central clock - MAP & photo of the clock
