Hedge Planting & Mulching Action Day - The Hampshire Hedge 18th Dec

By CPRE Hampshire, the Countryside Charity

Overview

Join CPRE Hampshire to learn how to plant mixed species native hedgerows for all to enjoy!

Hello!

We will be running hedge planting sessions every Thursday, from 27th November until the end of March. In December, January, February and March we will be running one weekend day a month. Our hedge planting days will be across Romsey, Ampfield, Hursley and Copythorne. Please book on to our events so we have a rough idea how many plants to bring!

Thank you so much for your interest in volunteering with us. Your help is hugely appreciated and key to the success of our work.

Facilities

The reserve itself doesn't have any facilities, but the cafe at the corner by the Garnier Road Carpark does have a toilet and refreshments. This is approx. a 10-min walk from where we will be working.

Please bring:

  • Packed lunches and water
  • Long sleeve and sturdy trousers
  • Gardening gloves (if you have any!)
  • Spade (if you have one!)
  • Wheelbarrow (if you have one!)
  • Water proofs
  • Boots (the ground may be wet and muddy)

There will be some thorny species so long sleeves, hats and thick trousers are advisable! I have some planting spades, gloves and glasses, but if you have your own and they are easy to bring then please do bring them along. We will also be mulching the hedge as we go along so if you can bring a wheelbarrow and shovel thats a great help.

Everyone is welcome (under 18yrs must be accompanied by an adult).

The event will go ahead drizzle or shine, but we will let you know if we are cancelling due to more extreme weather.

The Hampshire Hedge Project

This event is part of the wider Hampshire Hedge project, connecting up the New Forest and the South Downs National Parks with green corridor of hedgerows and wild spaces. Over a 3-year period (starting Autumn 2023) CPRE Hampshire will restore a network of 12 – 14 miles of hedgerows working with local communities, schools, landowners and farmers to manage existing hedgerows and plant new ones, connecting up copses and meadows along the way.

Hedgerows are an incredibly important landscape feature, forming the quintessential English countryside view, as well as important for much of our native wildlife, flood management and for the climate through carbon storage. We have lost half of our hedgerows since 1945 (lined up the loss of hedgerows amounts to a distance greater than the distance to the moon) and we are losing the skills to manage them well. For further information on getting involved in the project please contact us at hampshirehedge@cprehampshire.org.uk.
