About this event
Join us for a special three-hour online symposium dedicated to advancing knowledge and conservation of hedgehogs.
This event will bring together leading researchers to share four in-depth presentations covering their latest findings, followed by interactive Q&A sessions where attendees can engage directly with the speakers.
The symposium will conclude with a forward-looking round-up of upcoming research projects, highlighting emerging themes and future directions in the field.
Whether you’re a researcher, conservation practitioner, wildlife enthusiast, or simply curious about hedgehogs, this event offers a unique opportunity to learn, connect, and contribute to the growing body of hedgehog science.
This event is delivered by the Biological Recording Company, British Hedgehog Preservation Society and People's Trust for Endangered Species.
Speaker Programme
The Hedgehog Research Virtual Symposium will be hosted by Grace Johnson (Hedgehog Street) and will feature 4 presentations and a round-up of other hedgehog research:
- Mortality, Movement and Mitigation Around Roads: The Case of the West European Hedgehog with Dr Lauren Moore (Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust)
- More speaker details coming soon...
The presentations will be recorded and shared with those who booked alongside Q&A transcripts and lists of useful links via a password-protected website following the event.
Mortality, Movement and Mitigation Around Roads: The Case of the West European Hedgehog
Dr Lauren Moore (Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust)
Roads are considered a serious conservation threat to the west-European hedgehog. In this talk, Lauren will present new research exploring the scale of the problem, both locally and nationally, and how this affects the extinction risk of hedgehog populations today and in the future. Drawing on one of the largest hedgehog GPS tracking datasets in the UK, Lauren will reveal how roads can alter hedgehog movement and what this means for fragmentation at the population and genetic level. Finally, she will share data on the effectiveness of road tunnels - a widely recommended but rarely scrutinised mitigation strategy – and explore other solutions for reducing roadkill and improving habitat connectivity.
Dr Lauren Moore is the Science and Research Coordinator at Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust where she helps to build global research programmes for on-the-ground impact. Previously, Lauren was a PhD Researcher and Research Fellow at Nottingham Trent University. Here, she focused on the development of the National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme and studied the impacts of roads on wildlife such as hedgehogs.
