About this event

Help us rejuvanate hedgerows in South Gloucestershire and learn the traditional craft of hedgelaying.

This training session is led by professional hedgelayer Mike Reed. Based in Chew Valley, Mike has over 20 years experience in hedgelaying, and will be teaching us how to lay North Somerset style.

These sessions are best suited to beginners who are looking to try hedgelaying for the first time, but if you have done it before and would like a refresher you are also welcome to join. Please note we can only take 8 volunteers per session.

Following this training session we will be running more hedgelaying sessions, also welcome to beginners, throughout winter. These can also be booked on our Eventbrite.

If you havent joined us before, please register as a volunteer by clicking the link at the bottom of the page.

Getting there

The hedgerow we will be working on is here along the footpath on Pomphrey Hill road. What3words: ///sushi.tried.meal. There is free parking at Pomphrey Hill Pavillion, 5 minutes walk from the site.

About Hedgerow Heroes

At CPRE Avon and Bristol we have an ambition to create/restore 10km hedgerow by CPRE’s centenary year in 2026. Over the last 3 years we have achieved 5.85km of our target, which wouldn’t have been possible without the fantastic work of volunteers. This winter our Hedgerow Heroes project continues to grow bigger and better, now taking place across the counties of South Gloucestershire, Bath and North East Somerset, and North Somerset.

Planting and restoring hedgerows can prevent soil erosion, increase biodiversity by providing wildlife habitat for many species of birds, insects, butterflies and small mammals and can increase the overall aesthetic appeal of a landscape.

We still need your help!

Register as a volunteer to recieve details on upcoming activities, and join us to help improve hedgerows across the South West. Click here to register as a volunteer.
