Hedgerow & Harvest Still Life Sketching

Bring the gorgeous colours of autumn to your sketchbook with our new seasonal still life class. Following the popularity of our Spring themed class we're delighted to offer another feast for the eyes and for your pencils/pens/paintbrushes!Draw seasonal foliage, fruits, vessels & props guided by guest tutor Jo Blaker. Escape as you create calming compositions that evoke the wonder of the season through beautiful arrangements. Discover the beauty of organic forms in our range of reference images. And enjoy the touch of whimsy we'll be bringing to our subject, with characterful creatures incorporated into our set ups.Still life is a marvellous way to hone our observational drawing skills - whether we're beginners or more experienced artists. In this class Jo will demonstrate techniques for layering wet & dry drawing media and help you get to grips with negative space. You'll work through short warm up exercises that develop your observation skills and use of materials before spending longer on a more detailed study. This class will provide the opportunity to practice lots of drawing skills, help you understand colour and inspire you to create your own simple still life set-ups using the nature and objects around you.As our spring class did, this session will lend itself to using a concertina style sketchbook. All media are welcome and this class will encourage you to bring the colour! Think autumn palette - ochres, russets, warm browns, olives.

MATERIALS
Any materials are appropriate for this class. A mix of media will help you experiment, so gather what you have to hand—coloured pens, pencils, pastels, crayons, or paints. Some extra coloured or patterned paper and a little glue for collage would be a wonderful bonus. Jo will draw with a combination of wet and dry coloured media.

ABOUT OUR TUTOR

Jo Blaker (b. Huddersfield, 1983) is a visual artist based in Marsden, West Yorkshire. Jo holds an MA in Visual Communication from the Royal College of Art (2011). Since 2019, Jo’s drawing practice has focused upon the sketchbook as a site of expressive, observational work generated through the course of day to day life, with a frequent focus on landscape. Her work combines a holistic approach to drawing with playful material enquiry & a love of observation. Natural rhythms, forms & cycles often feature in her work on paper & with people. Alongside her personal practice Jo is a regular contributor to the learning programmes of leading cultural venues such as Yorkshire Sculpture Park & The Hepworth Wakefield. In 2022 Jo founded an Urban Sketch Meet & has been a regular guest tutor with LDG since 2023.
