Hedglaying Course, Devon Style
Overview
Hedglaying Course, Devon Style
Come join us for a hands-on hedgelaying course. Learn the traditional Devon style of hedgelaying from our experienced instructors.
Hedgelaying, often called 'steeping' in Devon is the traditional way of managing our hedgerows. Using billhooks, axes and saws, the stems of young trees are partially severed and bent over to form a living stock proof barrier, held in place by long pegs, called 'crooks', hammered into the bank. Though there are many different styles of hedgelaying, the Devon way is to create a low and thick hedge along the top of a large bank. Whether you're a beginner or looking to refine your skills, this course is perfect for anyone interested in conservation and rural crafts.
