Event description

Description

As a writer, marine biologist and broadcaster Helen’s work combines a scuba diver’s devotion to exploring the oceans, a scientist’s nerdy attention to details, a conservationist’s angst about the state of the planet, and a storyteller’s fixation with words and ideas.

Eye of the Shoal, The fishwatcher’s guide to life, the ocean and everything, paints a vivid picture of these clever, emotional, singing, thoughtful animals that rule beneath the waves. Our relationship with these scaly creatures goes much deeper than predator versus prey, and they have left their mark on the human world in many ways. Helen unhitches fish from their reputation as cold-hearted, unknowable beasts and reinvents them as superb wildlife.

Helen will be in conversation with biologist and writer, Amy-Jane Beer, whose passion for the natural world is reflected in her Guardian column, Country Diary.
