Event description
This event showcases Human Rights work delivered globally by academic staff from the Helena Kennedy Centre for International Justice.

About this Event

Researchers from the Helena Kennedy Centre (HKC) present a symposium of events tackling human rights issues in Yorkshire, India and Southern Africa, showcasing the global impact that the centre is having on promoting human rights on a global scale.

Human Rights from India to Africa

HKC’s work in India follows the ‘Justice for Her’ project. The project, led by Dr Sunita Toor, has seen the development of a police training programme focusing on tackling violence against women and girls across four states in India. The project has resulted in the opening of 51 one-stop victim support centres for female victims of violence in India.

HKC’s work in Africa will discuss the 2019 student trip and the upcoming 2020 trip, led by Sue Bulley, in partnership with Rotherham-based charity, Africa’s Gift, had a direct positive impact on human rights, specifically on the health and education of women and children in the countries of South Africa and Lesotho introducing the Wonderbag.

Business, Human Rights & Modern Slavery

Dr Craig Paterson & Sou Brogan present their research on the impact of new Modern Slavery legislation and the prevalence of Modern Slavery in the region. The event will incorporate an artistic performance from Mama Africa in partnership with Sheffield City of Sanctuary.
