This MCA-approved STCW course at UHI Shetland provides participants with the awareness and understanding of key human factors that influence effective maritime resource management. Designed for seafarers working toward their first Certificate of Competency (CoC), it develops the practical leadership and management skills essential for safe and efficient vessel operations at sea.
Through interactive learning and applied case studies, you will gain the knowledge and tools to enhance decision-making, communication, and teamwork on board. The course covers a wide range of topics including situation and risk assessment, situational awareness, effective communication, shipboard training, cultural awareness, team-working, leadership and management, and workload management. You’ll also learn to recognise fatigue and stress in yourself and others, and to apply strategies that support safety and performance.
Successful completion of this training meets the STCW requirements for officers in charge of a navigational or engineering watch, helping you build the confidence and competence to manage people and resources effectively at the operational level.
