HELP ME! I’VE GOT ECOANXIETY!

A mockumentary by Edna Attenborough on how to deal with the psychological overwhelm of climate change, starring WAG Chardonnay, rapper 50 Pence and many other colourful characters

Unless you live on Mars (and, increasingly, that doesn’t look like such a bad idea…) you’ll have heard the headlines about climate change.

Scary, huh?

Well, I’ve found them so scary that my main strategy for dealing with them so far is to put my head firmly in the sand.

But lately, as the ante is upped, that’s becoming increasingly difficult. And it’s making me anxious. Very anxious.

So, nudged by a commission from Psychologies magazine on “eco-anxiety”, I’ve been slowly taking my head out of the sand and informing myself. Tonight’s Mockumentary is a distillation of what I’ve learnt, particularly the different viewpoints, presented by a cast of colourful characters.

Cast includes the much-loved Chardonnay the WAG and rapper 50 Pence (those of you that attended Edna Attenborough’s last Mockumentary on “Comparisonitis” will be familiar them already).

NB– this is in no way a “green shaming” event. You will not be made to feel bad if you still eat beef, buy plastic bottles, fly and buy cheap plastic tat from Home Bargains. I myself still do all these things but I’m wondering if it would make a difference if I didn’t. The aim of doing this event is to inspire myself, and hopefully others, into thinking about where I stand on the issue and what I want to do (if anything) going forward.

One thing that I have learnt, from my resesarch so far, that definitely does make a positive difference is forming supportive groups in communities. These build resilience, bravery to act and hope. They also, says the research, help prevent you sliding into deep anxiety/depression. Having been there before, I really don’t want ecoanxiety to take me back.

In fact, I am really hoping that you will laugh from time to time, while also leaving inspired and supported as you, like us all, face the enormity of climate change.

This is a Women Support Women event which – as the name on the tin says – is a supportive group of women in and around the Aviemore area. You don’t have to be a member, or have attended an event before, or even live near Aviemore. Bring your friends or come along on your own – everyone is very welcome.

As there hasn’t been a WSW event in a while, there will also be time to chat. The venue will be open from 7pm, so you can grab a drink and have a chat, and the event proper will start at 7.30pm. There will also be an 'interval' / break half way through.

*This is a not for profit event - all proceeds will go towards the campaign to stop climate change
