About this event
AN URGENT DARJEELING TEA BUYERS DIALOGUE
Is the sun setting on the Darjeeling tea industry?
The future of Darjeeling tea is at risk – along with the livelihoods of the thousands that depend on it. THIRST is working with tea companies and local civil society to help reverse this decline.
You can be part of the solution - will you join us?
THIRST’s research reveals a stark gap between human rights standards and reality in the tea industry, driven by factors such as low prices, power imbalances, lack of transparency, and cut-throat competition. Many tea producers are forced to sell below cost, leading to poor conditions - and even closures. Workers are struggling to manage and seek work elsewhere, so labour shortages are putting further pressure on the producers. Young people don't see a future for themselves in Darjeeling tea and are leaving the region to find work elsewhere.
Those are not the kind of stories you want to hear from your supply chain.
But workers and young people tell THIRST they would love to stay – if only they had decent jobs. So THIRST is inviting buyers, producers and others to collaborate on a new, fairer way forward.
This Darjeeling Tea Buyers' Dialogue is the first step.
Unless we act fast - and together - there may be no future for Darjeeling tea. That's why we're inviting buyers of Darjeeling tea - especially those in the specialty tea trade - to come together.
Join us to find out what we are doing to help, and how you can be part of the solution.
Please pass the message on through your networks. The more people who are involved the more likely we are to succeed!
Frequently asked questions
This event is primarily for buyers of Darjeeling tea (blenders, brokers, brands and retailers) who know that their customers treasure Darjeeling tea, who would not want to see it disappear and who want it to be produced under fair and ethical conditions.
The tea industry's challenges are being felt most accutely in Darjeeling. Tea estates are already closing down leaving workers jobless and unable to support their families. Awareness of the poor conditions faced by workers is growing, but the market for specialty teas like Darjeeling is too...
The many threats to Darjeeling's tea production are closely interlinked with the lives of the people who grow, pluck and process it. Every industry must respect the human rights of its workers - it's the right thing to do. But it's also right for the industry: without rights, workers leave.
We invite you to join a conversation about why Darjeeling is struggling and about the potential solutions that we could bring, if we all work together. We hope you will become part of the save Darjeeling tea project in due course, but joining this call does not involve any committment from you.
THIRST is The International Roundtable for Sustainable Tea. We're working with the tea company, Teekampagne, to improve the jobs and incomes of Darjeeling's women tea workers and their families. But a single buyer alone cannot change the sector. So we are convening others to collaborate for change.
THIRST, Teekampagne and its suppliers: Chamong, Tea Promoters India, Makaibari, Goomtee and Jay Shree. Local NGOs DLR Prerna and WWF-India.
