Help Shape the Future of Grazing and Land Management on Dartmoor
Come join us at the Two Bridges Hotel for an important Commoner and Landowner Engagement Event hosted by the Dartmoor Land Use Management Group (DLUMG).
This event is a chance for you – as someone who knows Dartmoor’s land, stock and challenges first-hand – to help shape the next steps in how Dartmoor is managed for farming, nature, heritage and the wider public goods.
Why come along?
DLUMG was set up earlier this year to bring together key partners, including farmers and landowners following the 2023 Fursdon Review. Chaired by Phil Stocker, the group reports directly to Government via Defra. It has a clear focus:
Supporting viable farming businesses while improving outcomes for nature, climate resilience and the landscape we all care about.
We’re now moving from discussion to action on the ground – and we need your experience and insight.
What we’re looking for
We’re seeking farms and commons on Dartmoor willing to help test and trial practical management approaches, particularly in:
- Controlling dominant species – such as molinia, bracken and gorse – in ways that work for graziers and for nature.
- Developing integrated land management trials at scale that balance viable livestock grazing with:
- wildfire prevention
- nature and heritage enhancement
- climate resilience
- and, where relevant, managing recreational pressure
- Learning from experience – sharing what’s worked (and what hasn’t) on your land, including different stocking regimes or species mixes.
Support available
There is funding and management support available for those who wish to get involved, including specialist advice where needed. Natural England and the RPA are also engaged to ensure the trials align with existing agri-environment schemes.
The event
At the meeting we’ll:
- Give a short overview of DLUMG’s work and aims
- Outline what we’re looking for from trial sites
- Hear your views, ideas and questions
- Share how you can express interest – either on the night or afterwards
This is a real opportunity to have your say, influence future land management on Dartmoor, and help ensure that farming remains central to its future.
We look forward to seeing you.
Kind regards,
Phil, Tom and Tamsin
