Agenda
Date: Wednesday 24 September 2025
Taster Workshop: 10.00 am – 2.00 pm
Venue: Curzon Building
Delivered by two of our leading academics, Michelle Harte and Chinny Nzekwe-Excel, both of whom have been involved since the programme's inception.
Being a leader isn’t just about responsibility for others—it starts with responsibility for yourself. Knowing what you need, when you need it, and how to get it can be tough if you don’t first know yourself. You will learn from Michelle and Chinny's industry expertise and practical knowledge. This event will offers a unique opportunity to take part in a face-to-face session and connect with other business leaders.
Looking in the mirror takes courage. It demands vulnerability and resilience like no other. The question isn’t what if I fail? —It’s what if you fly?
Self-Awareness
Effective leadership begins with self-awareness. Before we can guide and support others, we must first understand and take responsibility for ourselves. Recognising what we need, when we need it, and how to access it requires a grounded sense of who we are.
Leaders who neglect their own growth struggle to foster growth in others. Resentment, comparison, and inauthenticity create barriers, while self-awareness builds resilience, confidence, and authenticity. Developing this foundation enables us to support others from a place of strength rather than deficit.
This session will focus on:
- Identifying and harnessing your strengths
- Learning when to amplify or dial back aspects of your style
- Building awareness of others’ personalities to strengthen relationships and collaboration
Self-awareness is not about perfection—it’s about clarity, adaptability, and responsibility. These are the qualities that sustain effective leadership.
You'll have the opportunity to network with other academics delivering the programme, as well as meet former participants over a light networking lunch. They will give you first-hand insights into the benefits of the programme, while you'll also have the opportunity to ask questions and explore whether the programme is the right fit for you and your business.
Speakers:
Michelle Harte: Visiting Lecturer at Birmingham City Business School
Chinny Nzekwe-Excel: Associate Professor in Enterprise and Corporate Development, Help to Grow Programme Director
