Staff training opportunity: Helping you to respond to student mental health issues at Sussex

The Student Experience Division has organised a number of training sessions for Sussex staff, with the aim of supporting you to respond confidently to students with mental health issues before referring them on for support.

This training is intended for any member of Academic or Professional Services staff (outside the Directorate for the Student Experience) whose role may frequently be “student-facing” and who feel that this training would be useful and supportive.

Aims:
• To support you to support students by building confidence, knowledge, understanding and skills to respond effectively to students with mental health needs and those in crisis.
• To clarify referral pathways and procedures.
• To explore self-care and techniques which can support any personal and emotional impact.

Outcomes: Participants will –
• Explore the prevalence of student mental health conditions.
• Recognise signs and symptoms of mental distress and mental health conditions.
• Address some common misunderstanding about mental health conditions.
• Develop knowledge and understanding about mental health conditions and their impact.
• Develop skills to have effective conversations with students with mental health needs and those who may disclose thoughts of suicide.
• Clarify referral pathways and procedures.
• Explore your role(s) in responding to students with mental health needs.
• Consider and develop personal and professional self-care strategies (including debriefing and support procedures).
