Start point: Sizergh Castle National Trust car park
Length: 4.8km (3 miles) with 145m (475ft) of ascent
Time: 3 hours (approx.)
Walk grade: 3 (see grade description below)
This walk begins in the National Trust car park at Sizergh Castle and initially follows a well made track through the castle estate. It goes through the Brigsteer Park woods on a rough track (that can be muddy after wet weather) at the end of which, there is an opportunity to visit the Park End Wetland hide with views across the Lyth Valley. There is then a steep ascent along a grassy and then stony footpath to Helsington Church. The church is dedicated to St John the Evangelist and includes a war memorial mural, painted in 1919. The route then returns to the castle car park.
Please note: The walk starts and ends at Sizergh Castle but entrance to the castle is NOT included as part of the walk. The entrance charges for the castle can be found on the National Trust website.
Grade 3 walks may include some moderate ascents and descents. The path surface might be earth, grass or stone and – while generally firm – it will have some loose or uneven sections, or be soft underfoot after rain. You will also encounter steps, gates or stiles and narrow sections. Most of our grade 3 walks are suitable for families.
Participants will need to dress appropriately for the terrain and weather.
