Event description

Description

Join London Drawing Group's Luisa MacCormack as we transform our venue into a hothouse jungle where wild beasts crawl through canopies and our wonderful model poses in their midst.

Welcome to the incredible landscape of imagination and intrigue that is the mind of the first Primitive Painter; Henri Rousseau, otherwise known as Le Douanier, or ‘the tax collector’. Despite having never left Paris, Rousseau painted almost no other scenes than lush, thick jungles filled exotic animals, occasionally peopled with mysterious, ambiguous nudes. These scenes were the result of his own rampant imagination, used to escape the life of boredom and meniality that he inhabited in his role as a Customs Officer, nearly all of his paintings were based on sketches created in Paris's botanical gardens, as well as tableaux of taxidermy wild animals and Children's illustrations.

Known worldwide for his stunning depiction of a tiger stalking his prey through the blade-sharp grasses of a rain-splattered forest, Rousseau was dubbed a ‘primitive genius’ by many of his contemporaries including Picasso and Robert Delaunay, but never received mainstream acceptance, and continued his day-job as a tax collector until his old-age.

This class will offer both an insight into the man and his work via a ten minute lecture by our Art History Tutor Luisa-Maria MacCormack, as well as the opportunity to unleash your imaginations by creating your own eerie dreamscapes and abundant jungles and make the most of the beautiful colours, textures and shapes that the plants donated by the local plant shop will provide!

Teaching is hands on and friendly and we provide all materials needed but please feel free to bring sketchbooks/your own paper or any other materials you might want.

PLEASE ARRIVE 15 MINS EARLY in order to allow time for setting up and grabbing a drink from bar 'SUPERCUTE' where we will meet before heading upsatirs for the class. The entrance to the space will be clearly signposted

Accessibility at Brixton Village is limited - please email londondrawinggroup@gmail.com if you have any questions.
