Description

Hereford & Worcester Scouts - Activate Leader Weekend

Friday 24th to Monday 27th May 2019

This will be a weekend in the Lake District which is open to all adult members. (Leaders, Instructors, Occasional Helpers, Active Support Members, & Network Members) Primarily aimed at Hill Walking for those wishing to increase their experience, working towards a Hill Walking permit or be assessed for a permit. However, the weekend is also a great chance to come along, mix with like-minded people and take part in personal Boating, Climbing or Hill Walking.

Time and Dates

The core weekend will run from Friday 24th to Sunday 26th May. The hostel has been booked for the whole weekend Friday night to Monday morning. You can arrive any time after 4.00 p.m. on the Friday. We need to have vacated the property before 10am on the Monday. If you are attending for a Hill Walking Assessment or Training please note, the Sunday will be a full day.

Housekeeping

The weekend is based out of the School House at the Carlisle Diocesan Youth Centre, St. John's-in-the-Vale near Keswick, Ordinance Survey Grid Reference: NY306225.

Members of the Activate team will provide food for the weekend. Participants are just asked to muck in with the usual domestic duties i.e. serving meals, washing up, etc. a packed lunch is provided on both days but participants will need to supply their own lunch box and drinks bottle / flask.

There is no food provided on the Friday evening, first meal will be breakfast on the Saturday. In the evenings please show respect for other users and keep noise to a minimum after 11.30pm. As this is an adult weekend alcohol is permitted but we expect individuals to remember to act in moderation as this is an activity weekend and others may wish to enjoy a good night sleep. We do try to get a reasonably early start with 8.30 breakfasts on both days to make the best use of the two days. Sleeping is in bunks with mattresses and pillows provided but you will need to bring your own pillowcase and sleeping bags. The kitchen is fully provisioned so you have no need to bring plates, mugs etc. You will need to provide your own towels, some indoor foot wear would be a good idea to help keep the place clean.

Activity Details

Permit Assesment - For those already with the required skills and logged experience there will be the opportunity to be assessed to gain a Scout Hill Walking permit at various levels over the weekend.

Training towards a permit – For those looking to improve their skills there will be instruction available from members of the County Activities Team. This option is also open to those with limited knowledge of the activity.

Logging some experience – for those with a level of experience who just want to use the weekend to log some more routes. This could mean going out with the training / assessment groups or just teaming up with other individuals for a self-lead day out walking, climbing or boating.

Cost and Bookings

The cost for the weekend is £60 this is to cover the cost of the hire of the building, and the food.

If you require an assessment for a hill walking permit then please contact me directly for further information, please also note there will be an additional charge of £20 for assessments.

Your District may be able to claim back a proportion of this cost via a grant from Scout HQ but this needs to be done in advance of the weekend https://members.scouts.org.uk/activitiesfunding

The accommodation price includes breakfast on the Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings and an evening meal on the Saturday, with packed lunches provided on the Saturday and Sunday. It does not however include an evening meal on the Sunday as the intention will be to head to Keswick for food. The costs do not include transport.
