About this event
Visit the ‘fantastical’ Alfred Denny Museum, named after the School’s first professor of biology and established in 1905. The museum houses a collection of all major taxonomic groups, including invertebrates, fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals, in the form of skeletons, taxidermy, spirit jars, pinned insects, fossils, casts and models, with many dating back to the early 1900s. In addition to our main museum on C Floor we have a number of displays dedicated to unique collections such as the Sorby Slides: a series of preserved UK marine animals made by Henry Clifton Sorby which you can explore on the tour.
The meeting point for this tour is the foyer of Western Bank Library, Western Bank, Sheffield S10 2TN. Please note that the event times have been set 15 minutes prior to start of the tours to allow time for check-in - tours will begin on the hour.
UPDATE Monday 18 August: Infrastructure works in Firth Court and Alfred Denny Building
Urgent infrastructure works will be taking place in Firth Court and the Alfred Denny Building on the weekend of 13 and 14 September which requires the water supply being shut off. This means there will be no toilet facilities or drinking water in Firth Court or Alfred Denny during the tours. We have therefore moved the meeting point for these tours to the ground floor of Western Bank Library, where toilet facilities and a water fountain will be available.
If you are wheelchair user or have other access requirements, please let us know at the time of booking via the registration form, or by emailing engage@sheffield.ac.uk, so we can plan accordingly. Thank you.
Tours of the Mappin Building, the Engineering Heartspace, and The Turner Glass Museum are unaffected.
