About this event
Discover these iconic buildings, built between 1903 & 1905, which were the original college and library at the University. The tour will include the majestic Firth Hall, the original Chancellors Room and some of the University’s collections plus a chance to see the Rotunda. This was the original college library until 1960, when it was converted into staff offices, and is therefore no longer open to the public. This is a rare opportunity to come and see the amazing architecture inside and find out more about the history of the building and its impact on Sheffield.
The meeting point for the tour is the Western Bank Library, Western Bank, Sheffield S10 2TN. Please note that the event times have been set 15 minutes prior to start of the tours to allow time for check-in - tours will begin on the hour.
UPDATE Monday 18 August: Infrastructure works in Firth Court and Alfred Denny Building
Urgent infrastructure works will be taking place in Firth Court and the Alfred Denny Building on the weekend of 13 and 14 September which requires the water supply being shut off. This means there will be no toilet facilities or drinking water in Firth Court or Alfred Denny during the tours. We have therefore moved the meeting point for these tours to the ground floor of Western Bank Library, where toilet facilities and a water fountain will be available.

Tours of the Mappin Building, the Engineering Heartspace, and The Turner Glass Museum are unaffected.
About Heritage Open Day Tours at the University of Sheffield
During the weekend of 13 and 14 September the University of Sheffield will be running tours of some of its iconic buildings and museums. Explore architectural marvels like Firth Court and the Mappin Building and delve into the wonders held within the Alfred Denny Museum and the Turner Glass Museum.
There will be additional curated tours of the Turner Museum on 16 and 18 September with the opportunity also for walk-in visits during the week.
Western Bank library will also be joining Heritage Open Days with a public exhibition on Architecture and talk on 13 September.

Frequently asked questions
Children are allowed on the tours of Firth Court, the Mappin Building and the Alfred Denny Museum. There are family talks in the Turner Museum on 13 and 14 September which will be suitable for children aged 10 or above but the curated talks during the week are more suited to adults.
There is no parking on campus. Multi-storey car parks can be found on Durham Road and Rockingham Street, with street parking also nearby. Download our campus map from the University Website for all parking options. The nearest trams stops are The University (Firth Court) and West Street(Mappin).
All buildings are accessible for wheelchair users except for the Rotunda.
You must have a ticket for the following Alfred Denny Museum tours on 13/14 September and for the curated talk at Western Bank Library on 13 September. All other events will have the facility for walk-ins on a first come first served basis but priority will be given to ticket holders.
No but there are many cafes and bars on or around West Street and Division Street that will be open during that weekend.
