Event description
Explore Grimsby Kasbah’s past at this FREE event, also try some traditional dockside activities and find out about the Kasbah's Future.

About this Event

Be transported back in time with a guided tour to explore Grimsby Kasbah’s past. Learn about and try some traditional dockside activities including net-making, visit a Traditional Smokehouse and find out what the future holds for this historic area.

This event is FREE of charge as part of Heritage Open Days, but places must be booked in advance. If you do not wish to book via Eventbrite, please email HAZ@Nelincs.gov.uk to book your place.

Activities include:

  • Guided tours of the Kasbah (Fish Docks)
  • Guided tours of Alfred Enderby Smokehouse
  • Exhibition of old photographs and plans – can you spot any of your relatives in the photos?
  • Looking after Historic Buildings: hear about how we look after traditionally constructed buildings with Heritage Lincolnshire. They will be talking about how old buildings work and demonstrating one of the key skills used in traditional building maintenance – lime mortar pointing.
  • Grimsby Ice Factory – Making Ice for the World’s Premier Fishing Fleet. Grimsby Ice Factory was built in 1901 to provide ice for the town’s flourishing fishing industry and the ready availability of vast quantities of ice played a major part in making Grimsby home to the world’s premier fishing fleet. This Grade II* listed building is the UK’s last surviving example of industrial-scale ice-making with its equipment still in situ. It was the biggest of its kind in the world. Visit the Ice Factory display in Creative Start’s building to find out more, and listen to an illustrated talk about it at 10:30 or at 14:00.
  • Learn about net-making and ropework and have a go at it yourself with the team from Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre!

There will be a café area with refreshments available to buy, and you can make your own souvenir badge to take away with you!

Entry to the Kasbah is via pre-booked bus only, buses will depart from the Fishing Heritage Centre and include vintage Grimsby buses as well as an accessible coach. Return buses do not need to be pre-booked. All buses will return to the Fishing Heritage Centre and you can get on any return bus that has space.

If you would prefer not to book via Eventbrite, or if you have any questions for the organiser, please email HAZ@Nelincs.gov.uk.
