Event description

Description

Today Leeds University Library Special Collections contains some of the most outstanding collections of books, manuscripts and archival material in the country. How did they get here? Join us at the Treasures of the Brotherton Gallery to find out about Lord Brotherton - industrialist, politician and philanthropist, who devoted time to collecting books, archives and manuscripts in the 1920s.

At this talk for Heritage Open Days discover more about Lord Brotherton’s extraordinary legacy, and how it continues to this day. The talk will cover how Lord Brotherton’s bequests to the University of Leeds led to the building of the University’s first purpose-built library, the Brotherton Library, and eventually to the development of Special Collections in the 1990s. The talk will conclude with a focus on how Special Collections continues to care for historic, fragile and often unique material so that these wonderful resources can be made available for years to come.

Heritage Open Days 2017 runs from Thursday 7 – Sunday 11 September. To find out more about events in your area visit https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/
