Heritage Strategy
Event Information
Description
The starting point for this workshop is the recently launched Heritage Index, produced by the RSA with HLF to stimulate better understanding ofthe links between heritage, identity and local culture.
Marconi’s heritage runs through the town as the City's brand leader. But if we define heritage as ‘anything from the past which allows people to make sense of the present and shape the future’, what does Chelmsford’s heritage mean today? How can it influence the City Council’s strategy for long term change and help to create vibrant places?
Through a number of short talks and discussion led by Joanna Massie, RSA engagement manager for the Heritage Index, Barry Shaw, Changing Chelmsford, and a range of speakers involved in heritage and local activism, we will explore what people understand as heritage and how we can collectively make the most of heritage to complement Chelmsford’s aspirations to grow its community and economy.
We’ll explore questions like: What already succeeds? What needs to happen to encourage wider recognition of heritage? Who needs to be involved in these conversations, and who feels disengaged from Chelmsford’s heritage? And where are Chelmsford’s missed opportunities - ideas for participation that are currently being overlooked in favour of doing the ‘same old thing’?
In joining this conversation with the Civic Society and other participants, you will contribute to a coherent strategy for Chelmsford’s heritage. You don’t have to be a history buff - anybody with an interest in contributing to Chelmsford’s economic and social development is welcome to attend.
