About this event

Over the two days you will be timetabled into 4 different workshops, each lasting a morning or afternoon. We are delighted to host 4 visiting experts in their field to lead each short course. Your workshops will be in:

- Bronze Age coiled basketry and twinning (Vanessa Bunton)

- An introduction to Prehistoric textiles (Sally Pointer)

- Roman drop spinning and distaff spinning (Carey Fleiner)

- Viking nalbinding (Jenny Heath)

All workshops will take place in one of our replica historic buildings. You will be tutored in some of the history of the textile craft and spend most of your time practising the techniques.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stay in the longhouse?

Yes for an additional fee of £20 per person. There is limited space and it will be communal sleeping on the raised bench in the Longhall. Bring your own bedding. A light breakfast of toast an cereals will be provided. A private link will be sent upon booking. There are many local BnB facilities.

Do I need to bring my lunch for both days?

Yes please -(we will have a kitchen full of food for Saturday night and breakfast things)

What is disabled access like on site?

The site has a track leading up to the replica buildings which is accessible if a little bumpy. The site is grassed and may become muddy if it is too wet. If you have a wheelchair that is for outside it is recommended

Can I bring my carer?

Please contact the centre to discuss any individual needs atc@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk we are an educational site and will make every effort to be as inclusive as possible.

Are dogs allowed on site?

With regret, we cannot allow pet dogs on site due to our 5 sheep who are not used to being around dogs. If you have an assistance dog of any kind please contact the centre on atc@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk to discuss further.

What will the historic meal be on the Saturday night?

The historic meal will be made up of a vegetarian dish called a frumenty containing pearl barley, a dish of chicken pieces, some bread and cheeses, salad, a frumenty of vegetable for a gluten free option, and stewed apples with honey. Buy a ticket for this from the link provided once you book.

Do I need to bring a camping chair?

Bring a camping chair if you like. We have wooden benches to sit on. Perhaps a cushion would be a minimum requirement.

Can I stay for the tutor lecture in the evening if I don't stay for the meal?

Yes of course. There are two local pubs in Cranborne and a restaurant. Booking ahead is advised - the lecture will start around 7pm depending upon when we finish the dinner.

If I don't stay in the Longhall where do I stay the night as I'm not local to the area?

There is a campsite outside of Verwood and several BnBs locally. This would be something you would arrange and book yourself.

Is the event over 18s only?

All event participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. There will be 2 full on, long days of textiles so we suggest older teenagers who have an avid interest. Please get in touch with the centre if you have any queries.

Can I stay in my campervan at the Ancient Technology Centre?

We have limited capacity for campervans- please get in touch with the centre before booking.

Can I stay friday night?

With regret we can only offer the Saturday night of 6th July for staying on site due to staffing.
