Heritage Walk: Railways and Riverside

Heritage Walk: Railways and Riverside

By Tyne Derwent Way

Overview

A Tyne Derwent Way Heritage walk, from St Mary's and back celebrating Gateshead's rich railway history

2025 marks 200 years since the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway — the world’s first public railway to use steam locomotives. To celebrate this landmark in railway history, why not find out about Gateshead's own railway history?

Join local guide Tony for a fascinating walk through Gateshead’s Railway Quarter, where the story of early railways and industry meets today’s vibrant art and culture.

This relaxed and friendly walk is a brilliant opportunity to get outdoors, enjoy some good company, and uncover how Gateshead helped shape Britain’s railway heritage — and how those same spaces are being reimagined for the modern day.

Meet at: St Mary’s Heritage Centre (entrance opposite the Glasshouse on Oakwellgate) What3Words: string.fees.stump
The walk will also end here.

After the walk, you’re very welcome to stay for a tea or coffee at St Mary’s — available by donation.

Accessibility: Suitable for all. We recommend participants are comfortable walking up to 3 miles or being on their feet for up to 2 hours — or travelling the equivalent distance and time in a wheelchair.
