Welcome to Heroes, Villains, and Martyrs: The Story of Smithfield! Join us for a thrilling adventure every Thursday from October 9th, 2025 at 7:00 PM (Europe/London time) as we dive into the rich history of Smithfield. Whether you're a history buff or just looking for a fun evening, this event is perfect for everyone. Don't miss out on this exciting journey through time!
The 'Smooth Field' was located just outside the city walls making it the perfect place for medieval Londoners to practice archery or sink an ale or two at Bartholomew Fair. On Fridays there was a 'celebrated rendezvous of fine horses to be sold' and farmers drove their livestock here from all over the country to be fattened and sold.
But Smithfield was also a place of rebellion and execution and this talk will explore the stories of the men and women whose names are forever associated with this patch of ground.
From the jongleur Rahere, to Wat Tyler, Mary Tudor, and John Rogers, the first heretic to be burned at Smithfield, we'll discuss the legends and the facts.
There is time for questions and discussions at the end of the talk. Feel free to join in or simply settle in and relax!
Hosted by Zoe Bramley, a member of the City of London Guide Lecturers Association.
