Event description

Description

Join us for our Herstories Festival launch party, as we kick off a fantastic weekend of film and arts activities celebrating women's histories.

Join us from 6pm, when local DJs The Soulettes will be warming up with a smooth selection of funk and soul. There'll be delicious food on offer from the Manchester Tart Company and drinks available from our bar.

From 7.30pm, we'll be screening Born a Rebel, a specially-commissioned short film created in 2018 to mark the centenary of women gaining the right to vote. The film charts the history of women's protest in the North of England, making it the perfect opening film for our festival!

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring five fantastic speakers:

Abigail Ward (Chair) Producer, presenter and co-founder of the Manchester Digital Music Archive
Madeleine Edmonson Actor
Elizabeth Gow PhD student at John Rylands library & expert on Enriqueta Rylands
Carla Henry Actor
Qasrai Shahraz Author, peace activist & founder of MACFEST

In the cinema room, we'll be screening a selection of short films, specially curated for the evening by the North West Film Archive: Roxette (1977/8; a student film following the lives of young Roxy Music fans in Manchester); Miners’ Wives Demonstration (1985; Betty Heathfield addresses miner’s wives, following a rally in Manchester); Asian Women Speak Out (1986; following activists’ campaign against discriminatory immigration laws); An Introduction to the Delia Derbyshire Archive (2018; a film exploring the archive of electronic music pioneer Delia Derbyshire).

Tickets are £3 and free for young people between 12-16yrs. All under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.

Feature film description:

Showing women’s lives from the suffragettes to the miner’s strikes, and much more, Born a Rebel is celebration of women in protest across the North of England since the start of women’s suffrage 100 years ago. The film’s title is inspired by the first person we encounter in the film – suffragette Elizabeth Dean who, celebrating her 100th birthday, defiantly tells the camera: ‘Between you and I, I must have been born a rebel!’
