Thanks to years of effort by National Harvest Mouse Survey volunteers, we now know more about harvest mice than we ever have before – but actually seeing one in the wild is still a once-in-a-lifetime experience. How much is still missing from our perspective of their lives? How do we conserve what we can't even see?
Dylan Beckham spent two years working with and closely observing captive harvest mouse colonies, identifying individual mice to track their behaviour and quirks. In this webinar you'll meet some stand-out mouse personalities and enter their secret world, drawing on behavioural observations and studies from across the UK and beyond for a deep dive into harvest mouse ecology. Are harvest mice as solitary as we think? Where do they spend the winter? And how many harvest mice can you really fit inside a coconut?
Dylan is an ecologist, research student and volunteer harvest mouse surveyor with a background in zookeeping and wildlife husbandry. Although her current focus is on beavers, she is also working on a project assessing the influence of nesting material provision on harvest mouse behaviour in captivity, and has recently collaborated with Bristol Zoological Society to investigate spatial patterns in human-elephant conflict.
