About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours

Calbert & Isabella are back by popular demand! Husband and wife, parents to 3 young people and the best of friends, we have a rich cultural heritage between us. We first started studying history books to learn about our ancestral journeys which evolved into a fascination and a desire to teach our youth positive narratives about themselves. We wanted them to know that they came from excellence.

This all started as, what we thought was, a one off event on 1 November all about innovations throughout Black history, from ancient civilisations to trailblazing leaders and from incredible inventions to exquisite craftsmanship. We highlighted the journeys of Black explorers and traders who travelled to, and collaborated with, cultures the world over, long before colonialism. The feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive with people asking for more. So now, we are delighted to present our new 4 part event series - Hidden GEM History. GEM is an acronym for Global Ethnic Majority, for our stories are all intrinsically intertwined. Black history is everyone's history.

This 2nd edition, Calbert & Isabella will be shining a light on ancient, cultured civilisations from Africa to Asia and exploring the stunning architectural wonders they graced our world with. There may be some you have heard of and others whose stories are more elusive.

At each event, we'll hear from esteemed community champions and spotlight a Black-owned business or entrepreneur and their products or services. Please see agenda for full details of featured speakers and businesses.

We look forward to welcoming you to our home for history lovers and truth seekers!
