Hidden Harm and Parental Substance Use
The experience of children and young people living with and impacted by parental problem alcohol and other drug use has come to be known as Hidden Harm. This is because the harm children and young people experience is often hidden, or if seen, is sometimes not recognised as harm and these children and young people, often do not get the support they need.
This session aims to raise awareness around the impact that substance misuse has on children in particular but also on the whole family. It explores some of the dynamics and challenges practitioners are presented with when working with children and families living with substance use, and key issues for navigating through this sea of complexities
Aims:
- To increase awareness of drugs and alcohol and the impact it can have.
- To increase confidence and awareness around the impact of parental substance misuse and ‘Hidden Harm’.
- To ensure appropriate responses to young people whose lives are affected by parental or familial substance misuse are addressed
- To increase knowledge and awareness of FASD and AEP and how to spot potential signs in young people.
- To have a better understanding of the Branching Out service and the support we provide to young people and families across Tameside
