About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

In the lead up to Jane Austen's 250th anniversary year our Hidden Histories tour guides have devised this specially curated walking tour exploring the lesser known tales of black georgians living and working in Southampton.

Jane Austen’s Southampton was a multicultural society. Not only the plantation families and their black servants, but there were also black soldiers who served with Wellington, black sailors who served with Nelson, as well as abolitionists, actors and writers.

Dive deep into the untold history that shaped Southampton, and experience the diverse heritage that made this city a cultural crossroads.

Join us and reveal the fascinating secrets of Southampton’s Hidden History!

Hidden Histories Trails are led by a team of friendly and knowledgable volunteers who are all accredited white badge guides supported by the Institute of Tourist Guiding. They have undergone an intensive training programme as part of Hidden Histories, developing and leading on their own research projects exploring the city’s early diverse history, and they can’t wait to share their knowledge with you.

The tour starts and finishes at God’s House Tower and will be available weekly throughout October. The tours cost £8 per person and the proceeds from ticket sales will go towards continuing our work to research, learn and share the diverse history of Southampton’s Medieval Town in new and creative ways.

Comfy shoes are recommended, as well as clothing for all weathers!

*Suitable for ages 16 +
