David Willetts will launch the third report in the Policy Institute's ‘Issues and ideas’ series at an event on 17 June.
Reports in this series focus on a range of issues from defence to education. The reports act as a vehicle for leading thinkers and practitioners associated with the Policy Institute at King’s to stimulate debate on contemporary, and often controversial, policy issues and to share their evidence-based insights with a broad community of policymakers, academics, journalists, business leaders and the public.
This report begins by identifying the public and private benefits from higher education and uses this to explain the rationale of the current system for funding it. David Willetts argues that it would be a mistake to abandon the current structure, especially as there is scope to adjust the balance of graduate repayment and public support within it.
David Willetts served as Minister for Universities and Science from 2010 to 2014 and is a Visiting Professor at King's College London.
