Event description

Description

We understand that some people may be apprehensive about starting a degree course, especially if they are new to this level of study or have been away from education for some time. To provide a head start on a course at Petroc we have developed a series of workshops to prepare for academic studies.

09.00 to 11.00am - IT Skills for Beginners

This workshop will provide a basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, including; producing and saving documents; Microsoft PowerPoint presentations; how to send and respond to emails using Outlook and how to use the internet.

11.15-12.45pm - Research Skills

This workshop will enable you to get the most out of the University of Plymouth's electronic library catalogue (Primo), Petroc's 'MyDiscover' and Google to source scholarly electronic resources needed for assessments. In addition, guidance will be provided for research tips and tricks; citation and referencing and how to access a large selection of electronic resources including full text journal packages, e-books and subject related bibliographic databases.

12.45-13.25pm - Lunch

Lunch will be provided for those who have pre booked.

13.30-15.00pm - Introduction to Study Skills and Writing Skills

This workshop has been created to give an introduction to the essential academic skills students need in higher education, including; how to write a good essay, with examples of good practice and what to avoid; critical reading, writing, speaking and listening; structure and coherence in academic writing; extensive reading, note-taking and summarising.
