Event description

Description

Highgate New Town was one of the innovative social housing schemes built by Camden Architects Department under Borough Architect Sydney Cook in the 1960s and 70s.

This walk explores different phases of its development – the concrete terraces of the Whittington Estate, the brick-built flats and houses fronting Dartmouth Park Hill and the recently built, energy-efficient Chester Balmore block which replaces part of the earlier development. It will also look at the five houses designed by Neave Brown for himself and four other architects which were the prototype for the later schemes he produced for Camden.

As well as looking at a variety of architectural styles, the walk will also consider the changing attitudes to social housing over the last 50 years.

The walk will last about 90 minutes and is a circular walk starting and finishing at Archway Station.

You can check travel options at the Transport for London Journey Planner.
