Who is Primary Engineer?

Primary Engineer is a not-for-profit organisation established in 2005. Our aim is to encourage young people to consider careers in STEM related professions.

We believe that Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics are key subjects in securing positive opportunities and career paths for future generations, and that this begins in Primary school.

'STEM by stealth' was coined by a teacher after attending a Primary Engineer course. It summarises our work exactly: practically applying Mathematics and Science to design and make activities, leaving both children and teachers inspired. Our work is supported by industry and education.

What is the 'If you were an engineer, what would you do' Competition?

Each year tens of thousands of pupils from the ages of 3-19 answer the question “If you were an engineer, what would you do?”. Pupils are tasked with interviewing an engineer, identifying a problem in the world around them and then coming up with a creative solution to that problem. They create an annotated drawing of their idea and write a letter to an engineer persuading them to select their idea as a winner. Every single entry is graded by a professional engineer.

Public Exhibitions and Award Ceremonies are then held all over the UK to celebrate the pupils who have taken part, before our University and Industry partners select a design from each region to turn into a working prototype.

What to expect at the event?

The first half of the event is our exhibition where some of the Distinction Shortlisted designs and all of the Highly Commended and all of the Winning designs will be displayed. Look at all the innovative and inspirational engineering ideas and feel free to take some photos (don't forget to tag us on social media @primaryengineer and @LeadersAward). Some engineering professionals may even be around to chat!

The second half of the event is our award ceremony for the Highly Commended and Winning pupils. We will celebrate each pupil's design by calling out their name as we show their design on the screen and present the pupil with their certificate, a photo will be taken with the special guest and the pupil will sit back down again.

We will have a photographer at the event who will take photos of the exhibition and the award ceremony. These photos will be uploaded to our Leaders Award Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/leadersaward/) page shortly after the event. Our Privacy Policy and Terms & Conditions can be found on our website at www.primaryengineer.com
