Details

Join us for a breath taking hike through the stunning countryside of the Surrey and South Downs National Park. This short but rewarding hike takes us across beautiful National Trust land—through mixed woodlands rich with blackberries. We’ll wander through colourful heathlands filled with bracken, gorse, heather, and bilberry, making our way up to Black Down,, the highest point in both Sussex and South Downs National Park at 280m (919 ft), offering sweeping views across the Weald. This walk comes with enough ups and downs to make sure your legs earn their tea break. As we walk in the footsteps of poet Alfred Lord Tennyson and explore the same landscapes that inspired Middlemarch author George Eliot, we’ll also take in the historical significance of Haslemere—a once-thriving Tudor iron industry town turned 19th-century literary haven. After the walk, there is an option to explore the Haslemere Museum, home to fascinating exhibits including an Egyptian mummy, Zulu beadwork, Eastern European folk art, and a beautifully curated wildflower display.🌟 Highlights:

  • Scenic trails through ancient woodland and heathland
  • Panoramic views from Black Down – the highest point in Sussex
  • Temple of the Winds, sorry no Temple, but a spectacular viewpoint
  • Literary history: Tennyson’s Aldworth & George Eliot’s Shottermill
  • Optional visit to Haslemere Museum (natural history, Egyptian mummy, folk art)
  • A gentle physical challenge with rolling terrain
