Review:

"Rishi Pelham’s second feature is a tightly-focused character study of a young woman trying hard to realise her dreams as her family life falls apart. Hilda (Megan Purvis) is a tough London teen attempting to carve out a space for herself as a dancer. She has talent to burn and a close friend Ayala (Yasmin Al-Khudhairi) who is her creative collaborator. Yet Hilda’s home life is a mess. Her parents have just had a new child and seem incapable of handling this added burden. When Hilda’s mum walks out on the family, her dad isn’t far behind, leaving their eldest daughter to step into the parental role.

Purvis gives a fully committed performance as a young woman struggling to find the space to express herself. Director Pelham punctuates the domestic drama with some superbly choreographed and intoxicating dance routines, which give insight into the character’s inner turmoil. Philip Larkin’s oft-quoted poem is placed front and centre, as Hilda is forced to decide between her own dreams and desires and the unwanted responsibilities of family. - Review by Rohan Berry Crickmar
