The Manchester Central Library and the Instituto Cervantes Manchester present the Hispanic Film Club, launching with a special series that celebrates the richness and diversity of Spanish-language cinema. This programme shines a spotlight on powerful stories of resilience, identity, and humanity, all told through the lens of female directors.

Join us on this cinematic journey as we explore the voices and visions of contemporary Hispanic filmmakers.

Ninth screening: La maternal by Pilar Palomero.

Synopsis:

At the age of 14, Carla is a wild and rebellious teenager. Living in a modest restaurant on the outskirts of town with her young single mother, she skips school and passes the time with her friend Efraín. When a social worker realizes that Carla is five months pregnant, she is taken to ‘La Maternal’, a center for teenage mothers, to live with other young women like herself. Together with their babies, they will learn to cope with this new adult life for which they had no time to prepare.

Novena proyección: La maeternal de Pilar Palomero.

Sinopsis:

Carla tiene 14 años y es una joven desafiante y rebelde. Vive en un viejo restaurante de carretera en las afueras de un pueblo con su joven madre soltera mientras falta a clase y pasa las horas con su amigo Efraín. Cuando la asistenta social se da cuenta de que está embarazada de cinco meses, Carla ingresa en “La Maternal”, un centro para madres menores de edad donde comparte su día a día con otras jóvenes como ella. Juntas con sus bebés, se enfrentarán a este nuevo mundo de adultos para el que no les ha dado tiempo a prepararse.
